Ortho K Melbourne
Getting Orthokeratology
Safe for all ages, Orthokeratology or Ortho K can help prevent myopia from becoming worse. Wearing a custom made lens while you sleep, will reshape the cornea and correct your vision so that you don’t have to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day. Orthokeratology is a non invasive method of treatment for myopia that can be administered even on kids. This involves wearing contact lenses that are designed to be worn while you sleep.
Orthokeratology vs Lasik
Orthokeratology lenses or ortho K lenses are glass permeable lenses that are worn to alter the shape of the cornea as you are sleeping. This is to help you see better and clearer the following day, without having to wear glasses or contact lenses. The unique shape of orthokeratology lenses allows the eye surface to be reshaped that would eventually allow your vision to be corrected. There is also a reason why orthokeratology or ortho K lenses are recommended for children with Myopia. The earlier Myopia is diagnosed, the easier it is to correct and to slow down from progression.
Dry Eye Clinic
We know that dry eyes can be uncomfortable and even debilitating. We have the latest technology and experience to assess, monitor and treat the symptoms as well as the causes of dry eye syndrome.
Wearing Ortho K Lenses
Once your Orthokeratologist has measured all the necessary parameters, they will order a pair of custom made lenses for you. They will then bring you back for a one hour appointment to assess the fit of the lens on the eye, teach you how to insert and remove the lenses and how to care for them. It is extremely important that you adhere to the guidelines carefully to ensure the safety of your orthokeratology treatment. At the end of this appointment, you will be allowed to take your lenses home to wear for the night. You will need to return the next morning to assess the treatment. Following this, you will have appointments scheduled at one week, one month, three months and six months. After this, you will be scheduled for review appointments every 6-12 months to make sure the treatment is stable. This schedule may vary depending on the parameters of your eyes.

How are Orthokeratology lenses different from normal contact lenses?
Unlike normal contact lenses that should be taken off before sleeping, orthokeratology lenses or ortho K lenses are designed to be worn when asleep. Orthokeratology lenses are worn at night so that the lens can mold the surface of your eye to improve vision. Got some questions about Orthokeratology lenses? Click the button below!
When should you wear orthokeratology lenses?
Orthokeratology lenses were designed primarily to reshape the surface of the eye for people with Myopia or nearsightedness. Anyone who has been prescribed orthokeratology lenses should make it a habit to wear the lenses every night. Failing to wear your orthokeratology lenses would give your eyes the chance to go back to the original shape and would mean you would not be seeing as clear by the next day.
Common misconceptions about orthokeratology
Orthokeratology is a non-invasive form of treatment used to treat myopia. However, because of some myths and misconceptions about orthokeratology, some are hesitant to get the treatment.
To help you decide on our course of treatment or therapy for nearsightedness, here are some misconceptions about orthokeratology that we would like to clear up for you:
Wearing orthokeratology lenses squeeze the cornea
Ortho K lenses do not cause pain or discomfort. However, orthokeratology lenses are specially designed to reshape the cornea. Though it is meant to alter the shape, the cornea is flexible and adapts to the shape of the orthokeratology lens. When not worn regularly, the cornea returns to original shape.
Orthokeratology is a band-aid solution to Myopia
Getting orthokeratology for your eyes is comparable to getting braces to straighten and correct the alignment of your teeth. Orthokeratology is an ongoing form of therapy that allows you to see better the following day after wearing ortho k lenses at night. During this time, the goal is to alter the shape of your cornea. However, even with other forms of therapy and treatment, the body can always go back to its normal or natural state. Though the results are not permanent, there is an evident difference when it comes to the results during therapy. Since this is a non-invasive approach, one can always change their treatment plan.
It’s dangerous to wear ortho K lenses during sleep
While wearing regular contact lenses during sleep is dangerous, orthokeratology lenses are different. These are designed to be worn during sleep to let the cornea adjust and adapt. During treatment, further instructions and precautions will be given to orient you about proper use of orthokeratology lenses but nonetheless, it is safe to use while asleep.
Fitting orthokeratology contact lenses is risky
Fitting someone for orthokeratology lenses doesn’t mean having to literally fit several different lenses to see which one is comfortable to wear nor does it mean having someone’s hand on your eye. Fitting for orthokeratology lenses means using a wavefront device that carefully maps our the surface and shape of your cornea without having to touch your eye. Like we said, it’s not at all invasive. In fact, bringing in children to be fitted for orthokeratology lenses will also not be a problem because the process is simple and painless.
